Monero Wallet Guide Best Monero wallets

Your exchange is delisting Monero: what to do now

Act before the withdrawal deadline: set up your own Monero wallet, send a small test withdrawal, then withdraw the rest. If you miss the deadline, exchanges typically convert leftover XMR to another asset at a price you do not choose, as Kraken did with BTC in 2025 and Binance with USDC in 2024. Owning XMR in your own wallet stays legal even where exchanges can no longer list it.

Quick steps

  1. Confirm the notice. Log in to the exchange directly by typing its address and read the official announcement and its deadlines.
  2. Install a Monero wallet. Use Cake Wallet, Monerujo, Feather or the Monero GUI from its official site, or a hardware wallet with GUI or Feather.
  3. Back up the seed. Write the seed words on paper and store them offline before receiving any funds.
  4. Send a test withdrawal. Paste your wallet's receiving address into the exchange and withdraw a small amount. Use the primary address starting with 4 if a subaddress is rejected.
  5. Withdraw the rest. Once the test arrives, withdraw the full balance well before the deadline.
  6. Download your history. Export your exchange transaction history for tax records.

The short answer

A delisting notice is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to act soon. Your XMR is not frozen at first. There is normally a window in which you can withdraw. After that, the exchange converts or sells what is left, often at an unfavourable moment.

Also check the notice is real. Log in to the exchange directly, typing the address yourself, and look for the announcement. Scammers send fake "delisting" emails with links to phishing sites.

Your three options

OptionGood ifDownside
Withdraw to your own walletYou want to keep holding XMRYou are responsible for the seed backup
Sell before trading endsYou want out of XMRTaxable in many countries; selling under deadline pressure

For most people, withdrawing is the best choice. You keep your options open and can sell or swap later. See selling Monero if you would rather cash out.

How to withdraw safely

Choose a wallet

Pick a wallet that scans the blockchain on your device: Cake Wallet or Monerujo on a phone, Feather or the Monero GUI on a computer. Do not use a browser "web wallet". MyMonero closed on 6 January 2026, and many sites using its name are phishing copies (see Monero web wallet). For larger balances, use a Ledger or Trezor with the GUI or Feather: Monero hardware wallets.

Back up the seed

Write the 25 words (or 16 for a Polyseed wallet) on paper and store them offline. Anyone with them can take your coins, and without them a lost phone means lost coins. See creating a Monero wallet.

Test, then withdraw the rest

Copy your receiving address from the wallet and paste it into the exchange's withdrawal form. Most addresses start with 4 (primary address) or 8 (subaddress). If the exchange rejects an address starting with 8, use your primary address. Send a small amount, wait for it to arrive, then withdraw the remainder. Our address validator checks the format in your browser.

Wait for confirmations

Monero becomes spendable after 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes. Do not worry if your wallet shows a balance as "locked" for that time. See sending Monero.

In most places, yes. Delistings are about what licensed businesses may offer. In the EU, MiCA Article 76(3) has restricted trading platforms since 30 December 2024, and from 10 July 2027 the AML Regulation stops crypto service providers handling anonymity-enhancing coins. Neither rule bans self-custody. Some countries have stricter rules, so check is Monero legal? and the country guides. For the EU timeline, read the EU 2027 privacy-coin ban.

Tax and records

A forced conversion to BTC or USDC can count as a sale for tax purposes in many countries, even though you did not choose it. Download your exchange history before you close the account; it may be your only record of what you paid. See Monero taxes.

Buying again later

If you want to add to your XMR after the delisting, the usual route is to buy Bitcoin, Litecoin or USDT on a licensed exchange and swap it, or to use a peer-to-peer market. See how to buy Monero.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my Monero if I miss the withdrawal deadline?

Exchanges usually convert or liquidate leftover balances. Kraken converted EEA customers' XMR to BTC by 6 January 2025, and Binance converted delisted balances to USDC from 2 September 2024.

Is my XMR safe during a delisting?

It remains on the exchange and can usually be withdrawn until the deadline. The risk is missing the window or acting on a fake notice, so verify announcements by logging in directly.

Does a delisting mean Monero is illegal?

No. Delistings reflect what licensed businesses may offer. In the EU and most other places, holding XMR in your own wallet remains legal.

Which wallet should I withdraw to?

A wallet that scans on your own device, such as Cake Wallet, Monerujo, Feather or the Monero GUI, or a Ledger or Trezor used with GUI or Feather for larger amounts.
